Keynote speakers abstracts

The Interregnum: In Between States conference will take place in Copenhagen August 20.-24., 2008. Each of the three main days will be dedicated to one of the three subthemes of Interregnum In Between States of Spaces/Geographies, In Between States of Disciplines and In Between States of Subject/Body.

Keynote speakers at the morning plenum sessions will address one of the subthemes as a way of opening up for a broad disussion to be continued in panel sessions or performances, in workshops or over a cup of coffee throughout the day.

In Between States of Spaces/Geographies

Dorita Hannah, Associate Professor at College of Creative Arts at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand, will speak about the subtheme In Between States of Spaces/Geographies. Based on Giorgio Agamben’s concept of Interregnum as the state of exception, Dorita Hannah will discuss the concept of the black box theatre as a spatial exception and the construction of theatrical void. Read the abstract for the presentation entitled BLACK-BOX: ARCHITECTURE OF THE VOID.

In Between States of Disciplines

Erika Fischter-Lichte, Professor at Freie Universität Berlin, focuses on theatre and performance research as an interdisciplinary field, and will address the subtheme In Between States of Disciplines. Erika Fischer-Lichte will discuss some of the demands and challenges posed on the researcher when investigating particular aspects of a performance. Read abstract for the presentation entitled “Interweaving Cultures in Performance“.

In Between States of Subject/Body

Gavin Butt, Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London, will address the subtheme In Between States of the Subject/Body. Taking cues from the histories of queer and feminist performance, Gavin Butt will open up to a broader philosophical consideration of the question of value and the ways in which we might hold something dear without necessarily taking it seriously. Read the abstract for the presentation entitled Should we take Performance Seriously?
